This paper, based on my Stanford Doctoral Dissertation is the first (and possibly only) empirical applied memetics research. My dissertation used a computational technique called Latent Semantic Analysis to represent the meaning of scientific articles in terms of distances in a multi-dimensional vector space by analyzing their abstracts. Using this model, I demonstrated the existence of cultural analogs of well-established neo-Darwinian effects by correlating variables describing articles’ relative semantic characteristics against their citation frequencies. This paper details vector space technique as applied to various corpuses of Scientific articles without using the resulting models to test for cultural selection effects.
